Week 6 - Extension Project : Explore It
'Fruitopia' by George Woolley
Considering that "eating 10 portions of fruit and vegetables a day could prevent 7.8 million premature deaths", George Woolley designed a wall stand of fruit so even people on the go can still manage to fit in a fruit to thier rushed schedules. He stated that "It's easily accessible - like picking fruit from a tree".
My favourite part of his design is the minimalist and somewhat playful design. The coloured wires shaped to hold the fruit inspired me to do the same. I created a little wire tree that held baby tomatoes. My main focus was making soemthing fun for child users so I adapted the wire tree to hold a singular fruit that is grown on trees. This teaches kids that apples, oranges, etc are grown on trees which incoparted my verb "to teach" into my design.
Woolley's design also considered not covering too much space whereas my initial idea of the wire tree was not practical in saving space and did nothave a foundation for it to sit on. i tired to figure out if my design would sit on the wall like Woolley's but it just didnt work. So, involving my idea of using sustainable materials, i combined my wooden table shelf idea to the wire tree. This provided a foundation for the wire trees balance and created space for more furit/veg underneath the tree. To fit with my educational aspect of design, I decided that the space under would be used to hold veg/fruit grown underground like potataoes.
Woolley's 'Fruitopia' inspired me to use wire as a material and really consider the auidence and how to make it functional but minimalist.

Mangier: Eating Tree by Smarin
Although I had an idea of using wire as a material, I wasn't sure what shape or form to create the wire structure. Mangier: Eating Tree by Smarin gave me the idea to shape the wire into a tree shape both engaging the child users educationally but also emphasises the presence of nature inside the domestic sphere.
Thier design uses wood in order to reiterate natures importance as "raw beech - 100% recyclable and eco-friendly". I really enjoyed the idea of engagig with the stucture and creating a design that takes a natural form and that is sustainable. This inspired me to use wood for the shelf structure to hold the wire tree.

Workshops
Ivan Juarez
'Build it' workshop
“He shelter’s appearance changes throughout the day depending on the interplay between light and shadow, reflections and hues. It creates a visual dialogue with its surroundings and shows all of the visual and ambient effects that nature has on architecture.”
Me and my group was inspired by Ivan Juarez's architecture design and created a shelter thats fits about two people inside. We visualised it to be made out of concrete and placed around parks and other open public spaces to provide a place for people to sit but have some privacy from the outside world. At night, it would become a shelter for homeless people to sleep in to be able to take some cover from bad weathered nights. Our design was similar in the geometric shape but was half open so it does not cause comeplete islation form the outisde.

Maiko Takeda
'Wear It' workshop
Takeda's complex and intense head pieces really incorporates the word "surround' which was my main focus when designing a headpiece. Takeda's design exaggerates the shape of the head and narrows the face. In response I created a headpieces that surrounded the head and covered the space around and added to the shape of the head.
Christoph Niemann
'Lost Letters' workshop
I found Christoph Niemann's work to be very playful and interesting. He uses combine 3D with 2D by creating a narrative with the object but makes it so interesting is that the object out of context would have a complete different purpose.
Charlotte Bracegirdle
'Revelation of Erasure' workshop
Charlotte Bracegirdle's 'Veil' uses white space to create an abstract form in the picture. The white shape adds narrative to the picture but also takes away the details. I was inspired by her work and created a a painting that took away from the face as i pulled the masking tape underneath the layer of paint. This created a white form on the painting.
Jordi Iranzo
'Explore It' workshop
During the workshop I was influenced b the theme of suspending fruit and vegetables in order to cover less space. Jordi Iranzo's 'Dalt' insoried me to use string and wire to suspend fruit/veg. His design is simple but effective and looks very engaging.
Chiharu Shiota
'Personality Quiz' workshop
Chiharu Shiota's installations are amazing mass of strings intertwined almost like a spider web. Her work often uses objects and relates t the theme of memory. I was inspired so i used a chair and connected it to the walls using materials i cut from my ex-boyfriends hoodie.
Week 1 - Research Task
Research task
Giancarlo Zema’s ‘WaterNest Village’
As the environment is heavily important considering the future due to the harmful impact of global warming caused by humanity, I researched design based on sustainability. A big contributor of global warming is the destruction of the environment for the construction of buildings and the use of unsustainable power. Having these ideas in mind, I researched and found an eco-friendly resort, also powered by solar energy, by Giancarlo Zema. The ‘WaterNest village’ is made entirely of recycled timber and aluminium hull. The internally used power is generated by the solar panels located on the roof.
This design is very interesting to me as is innovatively thought out and completely ignores the concept of needing land in order to construct. The overall design is modern and the aspect of it being sustainable and eco-friendly is very inviting. As it is designed to float, no land is destroyed in the process and can be built on many rivers and lakes, inviting people to live harmoniously with nature.
‘Do androids dream of electric sheep’ by Philip K.Dick
This dystopian novel depicts a world in which the environment is almost completely destroyed and animals are close to extinction. As a result, humanity is obsessive in having pets as it is seen as a social status. But more importantly, the idea id having A.I’s working as slaves and roaming around the world.
Both the obsessive desire to own nature and the freely roaming A.I’s sounds shocking for the modern audience although it doesn't seem too far fetched as technology is increasing rapidly. I was interested in the exploration of design in terms of the animals being part machine or also androids. The concept of having nature mixed with advanced technology attracted me to the novel.
----------
The subject specialism of architecture interests me a as homes and buildings are vital in society and the way they change and transform to fit the time and place. They can be very creative and functional and the way the innovation fits into architecture is engaging. Careers that are directly relates to the subject area include architects and interior and spacial designers. These course are very difficult and require high-level technical drawing. The process of physics and maths also relate directly to the are of architecture.
At the same time, product design and graphic design also capture my attention as I like to design and make. The world is advancing technologically and my interest in digital art is increasing also.
Week 1 - IDEA FACTORY
Jeff Muhs

As part of my final visualistion of my idea, if it were to become reality, i would have used concrete as a material. Expanding concrete and how it may look was part of my reaserch. I came across sculptures by Jeff Muhs, which helped visualise my idea of a concrete balloon.
Jeff Muhs stated that with "concrete, the inspiration was really the material and finding new ways to form it to get more interesting shapes...I’m gradually seeing what I can do with concrete and how I can develop shapes and make it interesting. Every time I make a sculpture, I say wow, this is really interesting; what if I did this with it? So the material process is what has been inspiring the work."
I find his his sculptures very interesting as he pushes the boundaries of the material. My three main words for my visualisation were 'expand', 'concrete' and 'feminism'. The refernce to a female body through his sculputres was soemthing that also caught my attention. The bikini and corset wrapped tightly around the concrete and the concretes expanded form may be a response to the difficulties and uncomfortable nature of female body beauty standards.
